The University of Calabar (UNICAL) is currently trending for all the wrong reasons, and this time, it’s not just talk—it’s affecting lives. Over 300 students from the Faculty of Dentistry are at risk of being expelled after spending years in the program, all because the school allegedly admitted way more students than it was allowed to. According to a memo dated July 7, students from 200 to 600 level were called in for a “crisis” meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi. What followed shocked many—students were told to go home indefinitely while the school tries to “sort out” an over-admission problem. For some, this means being sent home in their final year after years of hard work, exams, and school fees. No jokes—dental students who thought they were almost done are now being told their entire academic journey might not even count. {image 2} Sources claim the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) only approves a very small number of students to graduate each year—something like 10—but UNICAL admitted over 300 across various levels. Nobody knows how or why that was allowed to happen, but now it’s the students who are paying the price. Many of the affected students are speaking out on social media, calling the situation heartbreaking and unfair. One final-year student said, “I’ve passed all my courses, written my exams, and now I’m being told my admission might not even be valid?” Another wrote, “UNICAL gave us promises they never fulfilled. Now they’re asking us to disappear like we were never here.” What’s worse? Students claim they were warned not to protest or talk too much about the issue—or they could face disciplinary action. Yes, students who are literally fighting for their academic future are being told to keep quiet. Parents and students are now begging for help, calling on the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and even the presidency to step in and fix the mess. As of now, UNICAL has not released any official public statement to explain how things got this bad or what will happen next. This isn’t just a school issue—it’s a national disgrace. These students didn’t fake their way into school. They were admitted, they studied, they passed… and now they’re being told it might not matter. Something has to give—and fast.
